Our Story

Still Waters was created to be a place where men and women could find lasting recovery through honesty, community, and spiritual growth.

Our Beginnings

At Still Waters, our story is rooted in the enduring traditions of fellowship, spirituality, and peer-led healing. The roots of our program trace back to the earliest days of alcohol and drug recovery: the “retreat” model of Bill and Lois Wilson’s High Watch Farm, the guest-house approach of Hazelden, and the Minnesota Model’s emphasis on mutual help.

In 2009, this vision took concrete form in Tennessee. After acquiring a serene property in Lobelville, TN, our founders set out to build a different kind of recovery experience – one solely built on the 12 Steps and staffed entirely by individuals in long-term recovery.

Beginning modestly with 14 beds for men and a small, dedicated staff, we have grown to serve both men and women, operate on two dedicated campuses, and have seen over a thousand men and women graduate from our program and achieve lasting recovery.

Our story is about transformation: from isolation to community, from simply treating addiction to creating a lifelong fellowship of recovery. We believe every person who arrives here becomes part of a brotherhood or sisterhood for life.

Our Philosophy on Recovery

At the heart of our program is the belief that lasting recovery is not just a matter of stopping alcohol or drug use, it is a profound change in how one lives, thinks, and connects. At Still Waters, residents immerse themselves fully in the 12 Steps, guided by peers who’ve walked the same path. Through daily structure, community living, and spiritual principles, participants rebuild their lives from the inside out. Recovery here is honest, experiential, and deeply personal.

What Makes Still Waters Different

Dedicated peer-staffed community. Every staff member has lived experience of addiction and recovery. Their stories of strength and hope become living proof that recovery is possible.

True 12-Step immersion model. Unlike programs that include a few meetings, we live the steps every day. From morning meditation and readings to accountability groups and literature study, the steps underpin everything.

Lasting community beyond the program. Completion here doesn’t mean “you’re on your own.” Alumni support and fellowship continue long after treatment ends to support you in your recovery.

Still Waters isn’t just where recovery begins, it’s where lives are renewed, and lasting recovery is supported every step of the way.
